I left for Nicaragua on the early morning on April 5 and arrived in Managua around 2:00pm. We drove two hours and stayed in a town called Popoyo. Searching for good surf was our main mission of the trip. We drove through each of the towns scoring awesome waves at each spot. A few days we took a boat out to surf an uncrowded beach break and a fun rip-able point break left. Each day consisted of eating amazing Nicaraguan food and surfing as many hours as possible. The people of Nicaragua are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. The way they live would shock most people in America, without running water, some people have no electricity, and most houses didn’t even have beds. Seeing the way they live really made me appreciate the things that I have in life. Our trip ended up being an awesome experience that I’ll never forget it. I will sure be going back for round 2 soon enough.

Heritage Surfboards is proud to announce the release of a series of limited edition Longboards to celebrate the achievement of 50 years of board making. Head shaper, Brian Heritage collaborated with some of South Jersey’s finest craftman to produce a series of 9’1” Classic LE longboards. Each board has a handcrafted Balsa and African Mahogany tailblock crafted by local artisan, Jamie Kelly; along with a one of a kind glassed on handcrafted wooden fin by Juan at One World Custom Fins. The boards were then glassed by Brian Wynn of Wynn surfboards in either yellow, coke bottle green or aqua Volan glass. The surfboard blanks that Brian Heritage used to shape the boards where custom made with high density blue foam center between two stringers, and offset by two more butterfly stringers just off the rails. The Limited Edition 50 Year special make-ups are available at all three locations, and with
the limited run of only 10 boards, you don’t want to miss out on a chance to have a real piece of surfing history.

Danny Shredding at home.

For those of you who don’t know Danny, “Questo” Margagliano, you are missing out! Danny is one of those few friends who possess the “Perma-Stoke.” Long time Heritage team rider and NJ pro surfer, Danny has friends and brothers for life in our tight nit surf community and it’s a regret we have to write this post today..

Danny sustained a terrible injury on April 14th while on an outing with his family and friends at home in Pensacola, FL.

We apologize if our original story was mis-leading, we were just made aware that Danny was showing his kids how to belly-flop when the accident occurred. Evidently his ribs were sore from a prior injury and, last minute, he tweaked his body before impact to avoid re-injuring them. His friends and co-workers, with the South Walton Firefighter/Paramedic, were with him and reacted immediately. The dive broke his neck. Danny is paralyzed and currently in the ICU at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola where he remains on a ventilator. Although, we don’t yet know if his paralysis is permanent, this injury has been devastating to Danny, leaving his C5 vertebrate removed and C4-7 fused together. His family is trying hard to admit him to Shepards Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he can start the long road to healing and recovery, and at this point their prayers seem to be getting answered.

Congrats to Heritage Team 1 for winning yet another Oakley Surf Shop Challenge! This makes the crew consisting of Ian Bloch, Zack Humphreys, Jamie Moran, and Andrew Gesler four time defending champs of the regional qualifier. The only difference this year is the final will be held at Keramas/Canggu in Bali, Indonesia! No more Huntington hop for the boys, they will take it to Nationals in proper surf this year, Bali style!

It was no easy go for Team 1, Gesler, coming off knee surgery was obviously rusty, doubling a whammy wave of only 0.75 after slipping mid-turn on wave 3 in the first round. With a 3 wave maximum per surfer to allot a combined total, the rest of the team had to somehow rack up a heat total high enough to make the final round if they wanted any chance of qualifying. The boys were up to the challenge, posting the high scores needed to carry them into the final round where Gesler had his redemption at posting the whammy for the team and doubling a 7.00 after Ian set the scene with a higher 7 as lead-off for the round. Zack backed the whammy score with a high 6 and jamie ran a defensive anchor to hold on tho the lead.

Truth be told, team 1 may not have made their final push without Team 2 and coach Brian Heritage calling plays from the beach. Chris Eaves, Shane Matthews, Chris Howard, and Mikey Ciramella smoked the stacked Seventh Street Surf Shop team in round one taking them out of the final round all together, and just barely came 3rd in the final, look out for Heritage to dominate this event for years to come as this young squad is hungry for a win of their own!
