Welcome the fifth annual Oakley Pro Junior presented by Oakley,
in Sea Isle City. This is an ASP Pro Junior event, which serves
to give surfers under 21 competitive experiences before the rigors
of the World Qualifying Tour.
“It’s a litmus test. The local kids can test themselves
against the heavily sponsored guys. In some cases, it can help them
make the choice between pursuing a pro surfing career or maybe thinking
about college,” says Brian Heritage.
This event owes much of its success to Oakley, who is dedicated
to strengthening US talent for worldwide competition. Heritage and
Oakley have made a great team, agreeing on the value of cultivating
the next generation of surfers.
At the inaugural Heritage Oakley event in May of 2003, Californian
Justin Weigland took top honors in Ocean City. More importantly,
the contest gave locals a chance to cut their teeth against top
talent.
In 2004, New Jersey reaped stellar surf. Amid the worst spring in
recent history, the waves jumped up to shoulder-high for day one.
Weigland ceded to Florida’s Eric Taylor in a memorable showdown.
Then in 2005, clean two-foot lines came alive for the final day.
It was the tough Puerto Rican, Dylan Graves, who edged out David
Aubrey to pocket $2,000 and first place.
2006 was another landmark event. Brian Heritage made the decision
to move the competition to August, bringing pro surfing to thousands
of beachgoers at the Jersey Shore. Graves came out, again in rare
form, mowing down competitors to repeat.
"Heritage Surf & Sport has been a long time supporter of
the ASP World Qualifying Series. When the ASP introduced the Junior
division in the late 90's, Brian was one of the first event directors
to embrace the program and showcase the division as a stand alone
event,” says Meg Bernardo, of the ASP North America.
Oakley, meanwhile, has gotten behind an entire series of Pro Junior
events, making four stops of the domestic Junior Tour possible.
Each year, locals from Margate, Ocean City and Sea Isle have fared
better and better, breathing down the necks of their international
counterparts.
This year, the Heritage crew is proud to bring the Heritage Oakley
Junior Pro back to Sea Isle City. This is a Grade 2 ASP-sanctioned
Junior Pro event, with a $10,000 purse and maximum points toward
qualifying for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships next
January. Chances are, we may be watching a future world champ on
his way to the top.
